PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team concluded its season Tuesday night at Rhode Island College, falling 3-2 in overtime.
The Anchormen struck first, with Anthony Recinos finding Jackson Fox off a corner kick. Fox flicked the ball off his heel and into the back of the net in the 20th minute to give the Anchormen a 1-0 lead. The lead would not last long with the Spartans finding a corner kick opportunity.
Matt Spiller inserted the ball finding the head of
Liam Cramer who was able to find the head of
Stanley Andersen to tie the game at 1-1 in the 30th minute. Two minutes later
Sean Butler earned a yellow card giving momentum back to the Anchormen, with Recinos taking a free kick, finding Daniel Gryzbacz for a header, giving them a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
The Spartan's second goal came in the 80th minute with
Jacques Alfani finding
Tanner Curtis on the cross for a quick header into the back of the net and past the goalkeeper. The Spartans had control of the ball for most of the second half, but neither team could find the game-winning goal in regulation.
Overtime rules for the postseason this year see two ten-minute halves with the first goal scored winning the game. Both teams registered two shots in overtime, with the golden goal coming in the 98th minute. Sekou Kamara found Recinos who sent the ball past two defenders and to the back of the net.
The Spartans finish the season with an overall record of 7-7-5 going 3-5-1 in Little East Conference play.
