JOHNSON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team picked up their second win in two days with a 4-1 victory over Vermont State University Johnson on Monday.
Castleton's
Michael O'Connor netted a pair of goals with
Matt Spiller and
Stanley Andersen adding to the Spartans' score tally and
JP Maul collected his first win on the year in net. The Spartans dominated the contest, outshooting the Badgers 24-4 with 17 of those shots on target.
Johnson's Jonathan Cayole put the Badgers on the board after a miscommunication by the Spartans to give the hosts an early lead in the match. Castleton quickly responded with O'Connor following up on a rebounded shot from
Will Ambruso to put in the equalizer for the Spartans. O'Connor's goal in the 11th minute became the first goal of the Rutland, Vt. native's career.
The Spartans took the momentum and began racking up the goals from there. In the 40th minute, Spiller rifled a shot that went bar-down, crossing the line and giving the Spartans the lead. Castleton extended its lead with Andersen slotting home a well-placed ball in the lower corner just before the halfway mark to extend Castleton's lead to three.
In the second half, Castleton continued orchestrating the game with its movement and chances on the offensive side. The Spartans scored once more in the 76th minute with
Jacques Alfani delivering a headed pass to an open O'Connor who flicked the ball up and hit a half-volley shot that fooled the keeper to score his second of the match, finalizing Castleton's victory
at 4-1.
