Filed Hockey Keeps Out Gators

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team shut out the Russell Sage Gators, 7-0 Wednesday evening.
 
Peyton Richardson opened the scoring for the Spartans three minutes into the first quarter for her sixth goal of the season. Emily Downing then closed out the scoring for the Spartans in the first quarter, notching her sixth of the season from Arianna Spiezio. The Spartans began the second period with two penalty corner chances before Amelia Wilson converted on the second from Downing for her fourth goal of the season four minutes into the second quarter. Richardson notched her second goal of the night with eight minutes remaining in the first half to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.
 
The Gators fired off two shots to open the third quarter and could not convert. Wilson found the back of the cage for the second time from Haley Lassen, to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead. The Spartans put up four more shots on goal, with Jaia Caron ending her time in the cage with seven saves.
 
Zoe Martin saved three shots in a row to start the fourth period, finishing the day with five saves total. Madison Gile lengthened the Spartans lead to six with her second goal of the season, before assisting Ava LaRoss on her second goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
 
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, October 5 against UMaine-Farmington at 6 p.m.
