Field Hockey Powers Past Beavers

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team defeated the University of Maine-Farmington 8-1 Saturday evening.

Emily Downing collected her first career hat trick to cap off a seven-point performance. Peyton Richardson provided two goals and two assists while Amelia Wilson, Jess Smithson, and Ava LaRoss each tallied a goal in the Spartans' victory.

The Spartans took to the scoreboard 10 minutes into the game with Haley Lassen feeding Richardson to knock in the Spartans first of the game, opening the gates for more goals to come. Castleton wasted no time getting its next goal with the help of Emilee Higgins finding Wilson in front of the cage to bury the opportunity and extend the Spartans' lead to two.

VTSU Castleton turned on the jets with four of its eight goals coming in the second quarter. The flurry began with a penalty corner opportunity, where Wilson set up Smithson at the top of the arc and blasted the shot right past the keeper to bolster Castleton's lead to three. The Spartans' next two goals came from Richardson setting up Downing twice to extend their lead to five. Richardson capped off a dominating first half with a solo goal in the final minute to bring the score to 6-0.

Castleton picked up right where it left off in the first half with Downing dishing a pass to LaRoss who capitalized with a mark in the first minute of the second half. Downing went on to finish her career day with a solo goal which registered the hat trick and finalized the scoring for Castleton. The Spartans improved to 8-4 and 5-1 at home.

VTSU Castleton returns to action Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. with a non-conference game against Western New England at Dave Wolk Stadium.
