CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team shut out Paul Smith's College 5-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans saw five different goal scorers, including
Seth Dube who scored his first of the year.
JP Maul earned his first shutout of the season and the third of his career with two saves in the Spartans' victory.
VTSU Castleton put on a clinic at Dave Wolk Stadium, outshooting the Bobcats 23-6 with most of the possession going in favor of the Spartans. Castleton found their first goal in the 10th minute with
Jacob Barth sending in a cross and finding Dube on the other end to put away the opportunity and open the scoring.
Castleton set themselves up with a corner kick opportunity that saw
Sean Butler receive the ball and deliver it into the box where
Michael O'Connor was on the receiving end to blast the ball bar-down and give the Spartans their second of the match.
With the first half coming to a close, Castleton found one more goal with
Tanner Curtis sending a long ball down the field to
Adolphe Alfani, who used his speed to burst by the defender and slot one past the keeper to bring the score to 3-0 at the half.
Matt Spiller provided assists for Castleton's next two goals, with his first coming down the left wing and playing a beautiful ball to the back post where he connected with
Liam Cramer's head to smash the ball into the back of the net in the 62nd minute. Just minutes after Spiller dished the through ball to first-year
Jacques Alfani who knocked in his team-leading fourth goal to finalize Castleton's scoring at five and give them their fifth win.
VTSU Castleton returns to action Saturday, October 19 at 11 a.m. for Little East Conference action against UMass Dartmouth at Dave Wolk Stadium.
