CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team shut out Little East Conference opponent UMass Dartmouth, 3-0 at Dave Wolk Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Matt Spiller struck first for the Spartans 20 minutes into the first half.
Adolphe Alfani found Spiller to the right of the goal, with Spiller using one touch to send the ball into the top-left of the goal over the goalkeeper's head. The Spartans used that moment to keep the offense rolling, with rookie
Nate Wood notching his first career goal off a touch from
Jacques Alfani to put the Spartans up 2-0 going into halftime.
The Spartans kept the momentum going into the second half when
Seth Dube took a one-on-one opportunity to keep up with a Corsairs defender as the ball was sent back toward the goalkeeper. The defender earned a red card with 35 minutes remaining in the game which sent the Corsairs down one man for the rest of the game. The Spartans took advantage of the one-man-up advantage right away, with Dube taking advantage of yet another breakaway. Challenged by a Corsairs defender and pushed down, he was able to send the ball just past the goalkeeper to lengthen the Spartans lead to 3-0 with just over 30 minutes remaining.
Xander Berthiaume earned the shutout, saving two shots before
JP Maul took over in net with 14 minutes remaining in the game.
The Spartans are back on the road on Tuesday, October 22 at Westfield State at 4 p.m.
