ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey was defeated by Johnson & Wales University in overtime, 3-2 on Saturday.
VTSU Castleton traveled to Attleboro, Mass. to take on Johnson & Wales University on Saturday. The Spartans headed into the match looking for their first win of the new year. The two teams took the ice at New England Sports Village and were off. The first period took off as the defensive game for both sides looked strong.
Kirsten DiCicco held her ground in net, turning away all opportunities to keep the game scoreless after one.
Caslteton earned a plethora of power plays in the second and made the most of them. To open the scoring,
Katie Campoli and
Ellie Schliebener connected with
Alex Johnson on the power play to get the Spartans on the board first. Moments after their first, the Spartans carried the momentum into another power play to notch their second of the game. This time,
Julia Carpenter and
Victoria Griffin found first year
Taylor Adams to extend their lead by two. The Wildcats wouldn't go into the third quietly though, as they would get one back and would head to the third down one.
The Spartans looked to keep the Wildcats out of contention in the attacking zone, but costly penalties by Castleton turned the tides for Johnson & Wales and allowed for them to get back into the game. The Wildcats would take advantage of the power play opportunities scoring one in the third to tie the game up at two. Regulation ended and overtime begun. Castleton found themselves in the penalty box once again and the Wildcats ended the game with seconds remaining on the power play in overtime. Taking the game 3-2.
VTSU Castleton returns to action Friday, January 19 at 6 p.m. against Plymouth State.
