PORTLAND, Maine – The Vermont State University Castleton women's tennis program collected its first Little East Conference win Saturday afternoon, slipping past Southern Maine, 5-4.
Madelyn Nonni teamed with Natsuhi Onishi at the No. 2 doubles flight, putting up an 8-1 victory before the hosts matched it with a first-flight triumph. Olivia Rutkowski/Emerson Jolliffe gave the Spartans (3-7, 1-4 LEC) another point at the third spot by an 8-4 decision.
The Huskies (1-5, 1-3 LEC) answered at the sixth flight as Olivia Vance took a 6-0, 6-1 match but third-slotted Camille Jackson tallied a Spartan point to make proceedings 3-2. USM grabbed points at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles flights to overtake VTSU Castleton, but the Spartans roared back with Onishi recording a 6-3, 6-2 fourth-slot win. Trevisan came through with the game-winning point by defeating Rebecca Hamel, 6-4, 7-5, to down the Huskies.
The Spartans head to Plymouth State on Wednesday, October 4 for a 3:30 p.m. first serve.
