CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team fell victim to an 82nd-minute goal, resulting in Eastern Connecticut State taking a 1-0 decision Saturday afternoon.
Rylee Pepin sent in a pair of shots, both on goal, topping the Spartan (1-9, 0-4 LEC) lineup which combined for five on-target darts. Recently converting from defender to goalkeeper, Amaya Rogers turned away five of the Warriors' (4-4-1, 1-2-1 LEC) six shots on net in her VTSU Castleton debut.
The squads posted similar marks in shots and fouls, but possession heavily favored Eastern Connecticut demonstrated by the visitors' 8-2 edge on corner kicks. The Warriors, largely suppressed by the Spartan defense, finally broke through when a pass from Daria DiBiasio to Olivia Mullings was deflected in an attempt to clear the ball. Instead, Mullings ran under it and delivered a one-timer past Rogers for the Warriors' game-winning score.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday, October 4 when they head to SUNY Cobleskill for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
