COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team snapped an eight-game skid on the road Wednesday afternoon, posting a 3-0 shutout against SUNY Cobleskill.
Rylee Pepin found the twine with a seventh-minute strike as Maggie McKearin scored her second and third career goals to provide the Spartans (2-9) with insurance. Alexis Billings was credited with her fourth assist of the year while Becky Hannwacker collected a second dime. In goal, Amaya Rogers turned away both of the Fighting Tigers' (0-8-1) on-target shots for her first career shutout.
VTSU Castleton held the hosts shotless for the opening 60 minutes and finished with a 41-3 attacking edge. McKearin recorded eight shots, setting a new career high, to lead the Spartans' 14 shooters.
Pepin connected on the squad's first shot on goal, scooting a roller past Dory Gosselin for an early advantage. A 62nd-minute corner kick by Billings floated in front of the goal as a leaping McKearin headed in her first tally. The sophomore forward was successful on another header to the left side just minutes later off a pass from Hannwacker. Rogers faced a pair of Fighting Tiger shots and denied both, chalking up a non-conference triumph.
The contest marks Head Coach Chris Chapdelaine's 200th career win at the helm.
The Spartans' next test comes on Saturday, October 7 at Plymouth State. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
