Men's Soccer Downed at Keene State

KEENE, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team was defeated on the road at Keene State, 3-0, Wednesday night.

The Spartans (3-6, 1-2 LEC) launched nine shots but managed to put one on net, coming off the boot of Matt Spiller in the 81st minute. Andres Soto-Burgos and JP Maul split time in net as Soto-Burgos collected four saves in his 66 minutes of action.

Although VTSU Castleton held the Owls (5-2-1, 2-0-1 LEC) silent for most of the opening stanza, offensive pieces began to click when Mbambi Mbungu scored the go-ahead strike off a feed from Giacomo Sinopoli with 3:48 until the halftime break. Mbungu netted two more goals in the 47th and 55th minutes to secure a hat trick, the final tally coming after an Elias Stowell-Aleman assist.

Despite drawing eight fouls and four yellow cards in the second half, the Spartans were kept at bay as the Owls notched their second Little East Conference victory.

The Spartans head to the Constitution State for an LEC duel with Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, September 30. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
