Men's Soccer Endures Setback at Eastern Connecticut

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Despite scoring first, the Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team suffered a 6-1 loss to Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon.

Ayoob Musanovic collected his first goal of the season, connecting on the first of two shots on goal. Matt Spiller and Stanley Andersen also sent on-target shots while Tanner Curtis fired a high attempt. Starting in goal for the Spartans (3-7, 1-3 LEC), Andres Soto-Burgos denied seven shots before JP Maul took over for the final 18:30 and logged one save.

Soto-Burgos knocked away four shots taken by the Warriors (3-4-1, 2-2 LEC) which set up Musanovic's lead-taking dart in the 30th minute off a free kick. Moments later, ECSU drew a foul in the box for a penalty kick. Andres Mayuri's boot was stopped by Soto-Burgos, but Mayuri gathered the rebound and put in the equalizer. The tie was broken in mere seconds as Richard MacDaniel found Reid Dowling to put the Warriors ahead, 2-1.

Niall O'Brien added an insurance goal less than two minutes removed from halftime, then Miles Deiulis recorded his first career score in the 67th minute. Julius McNeill and Deiulis each found the back of the net in the final 15 minutes to give the hosts a Little East Conference win.

The Spartans return to Dave Wolk Stadium to welcome SUNY Canton on Monday, October 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
