Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten at Home With 5-1 Victory Over Thomas

CASTLETON, Vt. – Vermont State University Castleton field hockey extended their win streak to six games, as they defeated Thomas College on Sunday, 5-1.

Senior forward Emily Harris highlighted the offensive performance for the Spartans. Right out of the gate, Harris drove down the field and scored in just 27 seconds to put the Spartans up early. Harris' goal is the fastest goal in program history that has been recorded. Harris went on to score the next two goals in this matchup, recording her sixth hat trick this season.

The defense showed out once again for the Spartans. Sophomore defender Jess Smithson led the defensive front to limit Thomas' offense. Late in the first quarter, the Spartans earned a penalty corner to set themselves up for one more goal before the quarter ended. Smithson received the ball, hit a pass through her legs, and found first year defender Madison Gile to finish the play and record her first career goal. Castleton would go up 4-0 to end the first period.

The defense faced 16 Thomas penalty corners in the game. Maggie Schwartz, Frouke Adriaens, Smithson and Gile shut down the Terriers opportunities to keep the game in the Spartans' favor. Zoe Martin smothered the cage with nine saves and improved her record to 7-1 after claiming Sunday's victory.

Junior midfielder Amelia Wilson earned herself a penalty stroke halfway through the second. Wilson would go on to bury the opportunity to solidify the victory for the Spartans. The Spartans remain undefeated at home this season.

VTSU Castleton is back in action Tuesday, September 26th at 7p.m. at Western New England.
