Women's Soccer Stifled at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team dropped its non-conference contest at Middlebury, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at Allan Dragone Field.

Becky Hannwacker fired the Spartans' (1-6) lone shot, a 71st-minute attempt directed inside the left post. Facing a Middlebury (3-1-2) offense that averages 22.20 shots per game (21st nationally), goalkeeper Emma Ezzo shattered her previous career high in saves with 16.

Panther forward Fanny Lodge notched the first pair of scores as Mia Feldman followed with a goal in the 14th minute, giving the hosts a three-goal edge. Ezzo knocked down all eight of Middlebury's on-target shots in the ensuing 55 minutes until Joely Virzi logged her fourth goal of the season.

Shortly after Hannwacker's boot, the Spartan defense stood tall with a shot block, Ezzo save, and team save in a 15-second span. The Panthers persisted, resulting in Emmy Christopher netting her first career goal to conclude scoring.

The Spartans travel to Little East Conference foe WestConn on Saturday, September 23. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
