CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team made its mark on the program's record books on Wednesday night, outscoring NVU-Lyndon 23-1 while setting a new program record with 20 assists in the victory.
That Spartans' 20 assists break a 14-year-old record that was set in a win over Becker in 2009, and are the second-most assists in a single game by any Division III program this season. Castleton's 23 goals were tied for fourth-most in a single game in program history and was the most goals in a single game since the Spartans scored 24 against NVU-Johnson (then Johnson State College) in 2017.
Lacey Greenamyre's seven assists in the win tied for second most in a single game in program history, and
Kimberly McCarthy's eight goals in the contest tie for third most in a game all-time for Castleton.
Castleton outshot Lyndon 42-3 in the contest with a 35-1 edge in shots on goal. The Spartan defense held the Hornets to 4-of-23 on the clear, while Castleton went 6-for-9 clearing the ball. Draw controls favored the Spartans, 20-8.
McCarthy racked up 10 points on eight goals and two assists, becoming the 15th player in program history to score 100 career goals for Castleton. She entered the day four goals away from the milestone and ended the evening with 104 scores to her name. Greenamyre's seven-assist night gave her the most assists in a game since Emily Cross tallied the same amount in two different games during the 2018 season. She also had an impressive 16 draw controls in the contest, good for a top-25 single-game rank in Division III this season.
Madelyn Cote finished with seven points on three goals and four assists while
Megan Ward scored five times with one helper. Ward also had six ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Phoebe Loomis netted her sixth hat-trick of the season with a three-goal night and added three assists as well.
Maddie Brasser scored once for the Spartans after moving from the goal to the field in the second half, and
Kailyn August,
Colleen Sheridan and
Annie Duprey all potted their first collegiate goals in the win.
Tien Connor dished out two assists. Brasser earned the win in goal after playing the first half in net. She gave way to
Gretel Seaman at halftime, with Seaman finishing the game between the pipes.
Lyndon's only goal in the contest came from the stick of Isabel Bourgeois on a free-position shot in the third quarter. She also had two ground balls in the contest. Kiara Mack had four draw controls and Lexi Leroy led the team with four ground balls. Rachel Palladino stopped 12 shots in goal for the Hornets.
Castleton moved the ball with ease in the victory, connecting on passes in all portions of the field as it ran out to a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Ward and McCarthy both scored twice in the opening 15 minutes with Cote, Loomis and August joining the party. Ward then rattled off back-to-back goals to open the second quarter and complete the hat-trick before Loomis struck again for a 10-0 lead. McCarthy's third and fourth goals of the game—her 99th and 100th career goals—pushed the lead to 12-0. Ward added one more score before the break for a 13-0 lead at the midway mark.
McCarthy added two more goals with Cote scoring one to give Castleton a 16-0 edge before Bourgeois broke into the scoring column for Lyndon. Loomis and Duprey scored before the end of the third quarter to make it 18-1 with 15 minutes to play.
McCarthy bookended a five-goal final quarter for Castleton, scoring the first and last goals of the frame. In between, Sheridan scored her first career tally while Cote completed the hat-trick of her own and Brasser netted her seventh goal of the season.
Castleton is back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. with a road game at Eastern Connecticut State in a return to LEC play.
