PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team saw two Spartans garner All-Little East Conference honors Wednesday as Alexis Billings earned a second team placement and Kristina O'Neil was tabbed to the third team.
In her junior campaign, Billings collected 13 points on two goals and nine assists. The Carver, Mass. native's helper total is the program's highest single-season mark since Mallory Costello's 10 in 2015. Billings' efforts were largely away from the scoresheet until the final stretch of the season as the forward recorded a point in each of the last four games.
After netting the first goal of the Spartans' stunner against UMass Boston, Billings distributed an assist in matchups with SUNY Potsdam (10/24) and LEC leader Southern Maine (10/28). In the season finale against New England College (10/29), Billings tallied three assists in the opening half en route to a 6-1 victory to help warrant back-to-back All-LEC Second Team awards.
O'Neil made an immediate impact for the Spartans in her first college soccer season, starting all 19 games on defense. The Franklin Lakes, N.J. product emerged as a vital part of the back line with superior clearing and one-on-one prowess.
Of the six VTSU Castleton triumphs in 2023, O'Neil was a major cog in the squad's four shutouts. At SUNY Potsdam (10/24), O'Neil made an impressive block to preserve the scoreless defensive outing in one of many complete-game performances.
Both Billings and O'Neil return to the field next season in search of a return to the postseason.
