Women's Hockey Draws UMass Boston, 1-1

RUTLAND, Vt. – Vermont State University Castleton women's hockey tied UMass Boston, 1-1 Saturday afternoon.

VTSU Castleton faced off against NEHC opponent UMass Boston Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena. The Spartans entered the game 1-1-0 after picking up a 2-0 win over Johnson & Wales the night before. Kirsten DiCicco got the nod for the start in net for today's game, after posting a 23 save shutout in yesterday's victory. DiCicco and the Spartans went to work, looking for back-to-back wins over the weekend.

The Beacons controlled most of the of first period, out shooting the Spartans 10-5 and scoring the only goal after 20 of minutes play. In the second period, the Beacons were assessed a couple penalties and allowed for the Spartans to take control of the game. Alex Johnson and Codi Bacon lead the team in shots but it was sophomore Megan Ward who bagged the Spartans only of the game. This was Ward's first career goal. Eva Hofmeister provided the assist on Ward's goal, collecting her second of the season and in back-to-back games.

With the game tied heading into the third period, the Beacons brought the heat once again on the offensive attack. DiCicco made herself present with 12 saves in the third alone to keep the Spartans from trailing. DiCicco would also deny all opportunities in overtime to cap off a 31 save performance, and drawing with UMass at one a piece.

The Spartans are back in action Friday, November 10 at 6:10 p.m. at Worcester State University.
