CASTLETON, Vt. – Vermont State University Castleton fell in overtime to Plymouth St. Wednesday night, 3-2.
VTSU Castleton and Plymouth St entered tonight's game with 2-2 records in the Little East. The winner would have a strong chance of securing the #3 seed heading into the postseason. The Spartans played with high intensity and … but it was the Panthers who would get the job done at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Highlighting the match was junior defender
Amelia Wilson. Wilson dominated with her stick skills, possession, and defensive efforts that limited the Panthers throughout the match. The Enfield N.H. native had a pass that went through the legs of a teammate and found the stick of
Madison Gile who would bury the first goal of the game. The Panthers answered the call with their own goal to bring the score back to even after the first quarter.
Each team settled down for a while, trying to feel each other out and capitalize on the other teams' mistakes. Plymouth won a penalty corner in the third quarter, where Athena Comeau rifled a shot into the bottom left corner to give the Panthers their first lead of the game.
Zoe Martin managed to keep the Spartans in the game with her large presence in the cage, providing 10 saves in the match. The Panthers still had the lead with the final minutes trickling down. The Spartans offense created chaos in front of the cage for the Panthers and it would allow for Wilson to stuff an opportunity right past the keeper to tie the game at 2 a piece.
With Wilson's game tying goal, the Spartans would head to overtime for the first time this season. Unfortunately, their efforts fell short, as Comeau would bury the game winning goal for the Panthers.
The Spartans are back in action for their final game of the season against UMass Dartmouth, Saturday, October 28 at 12 p.m.
