NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Vermont State University Castleton field hockey defeated UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, 5-0 to clinch a playoff berth.
VTSU Castleton locked up the #4 seed in the LEC with their victory over UMass Dartmouth. Leading the charge for the Spartans was the English duo of
Emily Harris and Jess Smtihson, combining for six points in the Spartans 5-0 win.
It was the defensive for the Spartans who got the ball rolling to start the game, as Smithson would connect with fellow defender
Maggie Schwartz for the first goal of the game and her second of the season. Smithson continued to be a presence on the offensive front, providing a set up play to
Amelia Wilson who buried her sixth goal of the season and bring the score to 2-0.
Castleton's offense continued to roll through the Corsairs, out shooting them 25-1 and earning 14 penalty corners that would overwhelm the defensive side. Harris continued her historic offensive season with two unassisted goals that would extend the Spartans lead to four.
Genevieve Pitts assisted
Madison Gile for the final score of the game and
Zoe Martin improved her record to 10-7 (3-3) on the season.
The Spartans will host the #5 seed on Tuesday, October 31 at Dave Wolk Stadium for the quarter-final matchup in the LEC playoffs. Team and time T.B.D.
