Field Hockey Overwhelm West Conn. In 9-0 Victory

CASTLETON, Vt. – Vermont State University Castleton field hockey defeated Western Connecticut State University, 9-0 on Sunday.

VTSU Castleton bounced back at home on Sunday after losing two consecutive conference games this past week. The Spartans controlled the game with ease, out shooting the Wolves 22-3 and earning 13 penalty corners.

A variety of Spartans made their way onto the stat sheet, with junior defender Amelia Wilson striking first for the Spartans after Kimberly McCarthy tipped a pass towards Wilson's direction. Frouke Adriaens made her presence known early, setting up Madison Hanna and Emily Harris to put Castleton up 3-0 halfway through the first quarter. The Spartans kept rolling through the first quarter, as Wilson capitalized off a deflection to secure her second goal of the game, and to wrap up the first quarter was Harris slipping her way past the defense and setting up Adriaens to bring the lead to five.

The Wolves were able to slow down the hot start from the Spartans in the second quarter. Until sophomore Sierra McDermott rushed towards the net and slipped one past the keeper for her first career goal. McDermott's goal would bring the score to six as the end of the first half concluded.

The Spartans continued to cook in the second half, with Harris making her way past the defense once again, this time taking the shot for herself and securing her 41st goal of the season and her second of the game. Harris continued to be a threat for the Wolves' defense, making her presence a mere distraction as she was able to find an open Reilly Tennis, who also notched her first career goal in today's game.

Castleton finished off the game with a late goal from McCarthy, who was set up by Haley Lassen in the final minutes of the game. Zoe Martin improved her record to 9-6 and the Spartans went back to even on the year in Little East action, 2-2.

The Spartans host Plymouth St. in their final home game of the 2023 regular season, Wednesday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at Dave Wolk Stadium.
