CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer program saw its three fourth-year Spartans collect points in a 2-2 draw with UMass Dartmouth on Senior Day.
Jordan Mattison shined in her second start of the year, tallying her third career goal and second collegiate assist for the Spartans (3-10-1, 0-5-1 LEC). Holly Cudmore bagged the night's first score for her third goal in two games as Brytney Moore chipped in the assist on Mattison's strike.
Emma Ezzo knocked down nine shots fired by the Corsairs (2-6-5, 0-3-3 LEC) with a seven-save, scoreless opening half.
An early flurry from UMass Dartmouth was followed by a flip of the field and Mattison sending in an on-target dart. The next shot found paydirt as the Shaftsbury, Vt. native finished a long run with a cross to Cudmore whose lower-left bullet got past the UMassD keeper. The Spartans were held to one shot in the last 26 minutes as Ezzo's five saves kept the Corsairs at bay.
Soon after halftime, Moore launched a lofty pass down the endline to Mattison in front of goal who used her knee to tap in another score for the home team. Eight minutes later, a struggle for possession produced a loose ball that Kaitlyn Nguyen one-timed into the net from about 22 yards out. The Corsairs drew a penalty kick in the 62nd minute when VTSU Castleton was called for a foul in the box. Veronica Bock converted with a strike to the right side of goal to knot the match at two-all.
Ezzo snatched up a pair of Corsair attempts, UMassD goalie Grace Conti saved an Alexis Billings shot, and the visitors' defense blocked two Spartan boots, finalizing the contest at 2-2.
The Spartans head to seventh-ranked Amherst tomorrow (October 15) for a non-conference clash. Kickoff at Hitchcock Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
