PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Castleton University senior
Elise Magro became the 18th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau for the Spartans on Saturday as Castleton fell to Rhode Island College 63-52 in Little East Conference road action.
Magro entered the day 16 points shy of the milestone and reached the mark with a fourth-quarter jumper to give her 17 points on the afternoon. She also had six assists and four rebounds in the game.
Gwyn Tatton had 14 points and six rebounds for the Spartans while
Liz Bailey added eight points and four boards.
Kelly Vuz had seven points and
Delaney Whitehead added five with six rebounds.
Castleton shot 34.4 percent from the field (21-of-61) and 40.0 percent from three (6-of-15), but got to the free-throw line just six times in the contest. Rhode Island College hit 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the floor and 43.8 percent from three (7-of-16). The Anchorwomen hit 8-of-11 free throws. RIC had a 51-31 edge in rebounds, with 15 offensive boards leading to 11 second-chance points.
Four Anchorwomen scored in double figures, led by Izabelle Booth's 15 points. Jeniyah Jones had 13 and Angelina Nardolollo and Antonio Corsinetti added 12 each. Madison Medbury had 14 rebounds and Nardolillo added 10 for a double-double.
Both sides battled closely in the early minutes of the first quarter, with the two sides trading buckets. RIC was leading 5-2 before Whitehead and Tatton canned back-to-back threes for Castleton to make it 8-5 Spartans. The two sides went back-and-forth again to a 12-9 score before Tatton dropped in another layup for a 14-9 lead. Nardolillo ended the quarter's scoring with a jumper of her own to make it 14-11 Castleton after 10 minutes.
The Anchorwomen opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 15-14 lead, but back-to-back scores by Castleton gave the Spartans an 18-15 edge once again. Another four-point swing by RIC made it 19-18 Anchorwomen, but Castleton once again scored four unanswered on a free throw by
Luna Perry-St. Peter and a three by Vuz to regain the edge, 22-19. RIC tied the game at 22-22 on a three from Booth, but Magro made it 23-22 with a free throw. Five straight points by the Anchorwomen gave the hosts a 27-23 lead, but Magro hit a three with 27 seconds left and beat the buzzer with a pull-up jumper to give the Spartans a 28-27 edge at halftime.
A free throw tied the game at 28-28 for RIC in the third quarter before the two sides traded scores to a 32-32 edge. A four-point run gave Castleton a lead, but RIC answered with five of its own to go up by a point. The lead went to-and-fro once again, with Castleton sitting on a 40-39 edge after a Magro layup. A three-point play by Booth gave RIC a 42-40 lead late in the third, but Magro buried a three for point No. 999 to make it a one-point game in favor of Castleton, 43-32. RIC knocked down two more field goals to end the frame in the final minute, carrying a 47-43 lead into the final quarter.
Magro's pull-up jumper on the Spartans' second possession of the fourth quarter pushed her over the 1,000-point mark and pulled Castleton within two, 47-45. RIC buckled down from there, going on an 11-0 run before Bailey stopped the bleeding with a jumper to make it 58-47 Anchorwomen. Tatton hit a three to make it an eight-point game. After a RIC free throw made it a nine-point gap, Vuz hit a jumper to make it 59-52 with 2:33 to play. The Anchorwomen scored the final four points of the game from there, ending the day on top 63-52.
Castleton returns home next Saturday when it hosts Southern Maine at 1 p.m. in Glenbrook Gym.
