HENNIKER, N.H. – The Castleton women's hockey team extended its streak of wins to five, taking down New England College, 2-1, Friday evening.
Brooke Greenwood pocketed the night's first goal, breaking into double-digit scoring with 10 goals on the year. Emily Harris found paydirt as well with a game-winning strike in the third period. Dealing her 10th assist of the season was Samantha Lawler who has recorded a point in seven of the last eight contests. Kaitlin Bardellini, Alex Johnson, and Meg Aiken also earned one assist apiece.
Defensively, the Spartans (11-6-1, 8-3-0 NEHC) were bolstered by five Miranda Wheeler blocks while Rainey Lay denied two shots. Izabella Segui earned her fifth win of the 2022-23 campaign, posting 27 saves against the Pilgrims (4-13-1, 1-9-1 NEHC) in both contests this year.
The opening period began with back-and-forth play until NEC's Cassie Kelly was penalized for body checking in the 13th minute, spurring a surge of Spartan offense. Pilgrim goalie Thea Joerö saved seven attempts in the two-minute span as Olivia Lindberg blocked a pair to kill the penalty. The Spartans kept pressing and broke through as Bardellini and Lawler connected with fellow senior Greenwood to get on the board with 4:27 to go. Looking to retaliate quickly, the Pilgrims fired at Segui seven times but the sophomore held sturdy to keep the Castleton lead.
Each squad nearly lit the lamp in the second frame as Kelly and Katie Nealon had shots hit pipe. The Pilgrims killed two penalties, holding the Spartans shotless on both power plays to remain within a score.
Castleton drew two more power plays in the final period but could not extend the 1-0 lead. The Pilgrims drew its second man-up opportunity in the 14th minute, scoring 21 seconds later as Isabella Mariano tied it at one-all. Less than a minute after the Spartans got back to even strength, Johnson and Aiken kicked the puck to Harris who embarked on a breakaway. The Brit lofted a shot around Joerö, logging her fourth game-winning score of the year. Castleton kept the puck in its attacking zone for most of the last five minutes to chalk up its fifth consecutive victory.
The Spartans are back in the Green Mountain State tomorrow at eighth-ranked Norwich. Puck drop at Kreitzberg Arena is set for 3 p.m.
