NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Norwich on Tuesday night, falling 3-0 to the Cadets at Andrews Hall in non-conference action.
The Spartans fall to 3-9 with the loss, while Norwich improves to 6-5. The Cadets hit .263 as a team while Castleton had a tough night on the attack with a -.114 hitting percentage, making 20 errors on 79 attempts. Norwich had a 41-28 edge in digs, 29-11 edge in assists and a 5-2 edge in blocks.
Vanessa LeBrun and
Hailey Martinovich had four kills apiece for Castleton, while Martinovich,
Caitlin Mahoney and
Jenna Schott each had a block.
Maddie Delsignore had seven assists and
Jadyn Bates led the team with nine digs. Delsignore had eight digs and a service ace on the night.
Norwich was led by Ana Lopez's 10-kill night, while Maggie McNeil had five kills for the Cadets. Lopez also had four total blocks. Laura Farnum had six aces, while McNeil and Leah Matthewson had two each. Sarah Farnum piled up 25 assists, while Laura Farnum led the team with 19 digs.
Castleton hung tight in the first set, going on a 4-1 run to cut an early deficit to just two points—13-11. The run featured three kills from LeBrun. Norwich took over from there, outscoring Castleton 12-3 the rest of the set to go up 1-0.
After Castleton scored first to open the second set, Norwich went on an 11-0 run before a Cadet error stopped the bleeding for Castleton. Norwich rattled off another eight points in a row before Castleton got on the board, 19-3.
Denasia Pompey notched a kill to make it 20-4, but the Cadets closed out the middle frame with five unanswered for a 25-4 win and a 2-0 lead.
Castleton played its best set of the night in the third frame, staying within two points early, 10-8. A 5-2 run just a few points later drew Castleton within one, 14-13, when LeBrun capped the stretch with an ace. Six straight points by the Cadets put distance between the two teams, 20-13, but Castleton nabbed back-to-back points for a 20-15 score. Norwich closed the night on a 5-1 run for a 25-16 win and a 3-0 final.
Castleton gets right back to action on Wednesday night when it hosts NVU-Lyndon at Glenbrook Gym at 6:30 p.m.
