CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team got back in the win column on Wednesday night, defeating NVU-Lyndon in straight sets at Glenbrook Gym.
The Spartans improved to 4-8 on the year, while Lyndon drops to 0-13. Castleton had a 29-19 edge in kills, 14-5 edge in aces and 27-24 edge in digs on the night. Lyndon had three blocks to Castleton's one, while the Spartans held a 26-16 edge in assists. Castleton hit .257 as a team, while NVU-Lyndon hit .048.
Hailey Martinovich racked up 10 kills with a .529 hitting percentage, adding eight digs as well.
Vanessa LeBrun had six kills with no errors for a .545 hitting percentage and added six digs defensively.
Denasia Pompey and
Jenna Schott had four kills apiece while
Samantha Pickett and
Caitlin Mahoney had two each. Schott led the team with five aces, while
Maddie Delsignore had three aces and 23 assists.
Lyndon's Calysta Lohman had 10 kills on the night with eight digs and two aces. Seairra Anderson also had eight digs, while Kiara Mack added two solo blocks at the net.
The match was tight early in the first set, but Castleton used a 14-1 run to pull away for a 19-6 lead behind five Spartan kills and five Spartan aces. The teams traded points back-and-forth the remainder of the set, but Castleton's cushion was enough for a 25-14 first-set victory and a 1-0 lead.
Castleton raced out to a 10-0 lead in the second set behind the service of Delsignore, who had two aces in the stretch. Castleton amassed five kills in the span as well. An 8-1 run later in the set gave the Spartans a 20-6 edge, and Castleton scored the final two points of the frame on a kill by LeBrun and an ace by Delsignore to claim the middle frame 25-9.
The final set began much like the first, with the teams deadlocked at 5-5 before Castleton rattled off five straight points for a 10-5 lead. Lyndon battled back to a two-point deficit, 11-9, but a 7-1 run by Castleton gave the home side an 18-10 edge. After the two teams traded blows, Castleton rattled off three straight points to close out the night, capped by an ace from Pompey on the serve. Castleton took the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
The Spartans are back in action with a tri-match at home this weekend beginning at 1 p.m. against WestConn. WestConn will play Nichols at 3 p.m., with Castleton and Nichols closing the day out at 5 p.m. at Glenbrook Gym.
