SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Castleton field hockey team fell in a non-conference matchup at Skidmore, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans (5-4) saw
Amelie Steinel and
Emily Harris find the back of the net for their fourth and 13th goals of the year, respectively.
Kaitlin Bardellini was tabbed with an assist on Harris' third-quarter score.
Zoe Martin made her return in goal, saving nine of the Thoroughbreds' (7-2) 13 shots on goal. The win gives Skidmore a third consecutive victory, while Castleton had a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss. The Thoroughbreds' Carrie Hughes led the way with three goals, all following penalty corners.
Skidmore struck first as Carly Shea found Hughes on the afternoon's first corner, giving the home team an early lead. Nearing the first quarter's end, Martin saved a shot from Beth Yorns before the Spartans rushed down the field and Steinel had a shot denied, then collected her own rebound and buried it to tie the contest at one-all. Martin snagged two more saves and forced a shot wide in the final two minutes of the opening period before a near-silent second quarter. Castleton held Skidmore to a lone shot at 17:49 while Harris had two attempts with one on goal. Bardellini opened fire as time expired but the senior captain's shot was blocked.
Another Shea-to-Hughes scoring connection was postponed by Martin in the 32nd minute, but a corner minutes later led to Hughes' second score, making it 2-1 favoring Skidmore. The teams traded shots throughout the third quarter before Bardellini sent a bouncing pass in front of the cage that Harris buried for the equalizer, knotting the contest at 2-2 with 15 minutes to go. The Thoroughbreds pushed ahead once more off the stick of Hughes from a Shea corner to complete the hat trick. Martin saved a pair of Skidmore attempts around the 55th minute, but CC Wetter capitalized on an opening to create a two-goal margin that the Spartans would not recover from.
Castleton returns to LEC play on Saturday, October 1, at Western Connecticut State. Action at the Westside Athletic Complex is slated for 1 p.m.
