Harris Scores Thrice, Field Hockey Flattens WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. – The Castleton field hockey team shut out its fourth LEC opponent in as many contests, dropping Western Connecticut State, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans (6-4, 4-0 LEC) received a hat trick from Emily Harris as the junior forward logged her seventh career game with three or more scores. Harris led the squad in shots with 17 (nine on goal) while Haley Corlew, Madelyn Cote, and Mya Martin also had on-target attempts. The Wolves' (3-7, 0-5 LEC) offense was held to a lone shot that came in the fourth quarter as Castleton goalkeeper Zoe Martin posted a saveless shutout between the posts.

Castleton's first scoring attempts were stopped by defensive saves from Harris and Mya Martin, then another pair hit the post, and a third duo of shots were gobbled up by WestConn keeper Kayla Hnasko midway through the first quarter. In the contest's 22nd minute, the Spartans drew a Wolves foul to spur a penalty stroke. Harris took the attempt and connected for the day's first score. The Spartans continued to dominate possession until the halftime break to keep a 1-0 advantage after the opening 30.

A foul-heavy third period for Castleton was balanced by the Spartans' unwillingness to give up ground as WestConn's offense continued to be stifled. The Wolves kicked off the final quarter with a penalty corner, followed by their first shot attempt as Samantha Dultz's hurl went wide. The Spartans regained momentum and Harris sent a trio of shots at the Wolves' goal, connecting in the 51st minute to make it 2-0. Harris nearly smashed another score home a minute later, but would not be denied as a 58th-minute dart extended the lead to three and sealed a Spartan victory.

Castleton brings its unblemished conference record to Plymouth State on Wednesday, October 5 for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Panthers.
