Field Hockey Outlasted by Engineers, 6-2

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton field hockey team was bested by RPI, 6-2, at Harkness Field on Wednesday evening.

Emily Harris scored the Spartans' two goals, finding success on both goal-bound shots. Harris led the squad with six shots while Kaitlin Bardellini fired two shots with one on target. Madelyn Cote took a shot at the end of regulation that was blocked by the Engineers. Zoe Martin went .500 between the posts, saving six shots while allowing six scores.

RPI was first to score as Brianna Duba logged her first goal of the season after a pair of Engineer corners. The Spartans drew a corner of their own midway through the opening quarter that led to a scoring opportunity, but Harris missed wide. However, the junior forward would not be denied for long as Harris tossed in the equalizer with under two minutes to go, ending the quarter at 1-1.

Drawing a corner at the 17th minute, the Engineers retook the lead as Delana Bonci found paydirt with an assist from Duba. At the ensuing pass-back, Castleton charged into RPI territory and Bardellini took aim, but the senior captain's shot was blocked. Martin recorded her second save in a bombardment of shots before the Engineers' Julie Thomas became their third scorer of the night.

Coming out of halftime, RPI controlled possession and Duba put in her second goal of the night on another well-executed corner. Martin denied a pair of shots from Kaitlyn Stulen, but Rachel Banister pushed through and scored to make it 5-1 with eight minutes left in the third period. A Martin save ten seconds before the horn kept it a four-goal contest with 15 minutes to play.

The Spartans showed a flash of resilience as Harris drove to the box from midfield and buried Castleton's and her second score. RPI bounced back shortly after as Abby Peterson put the margin at 6-2. The visitors  hammered a trio of shots with three minutes to spare but the Engineer defense blocked all three.

Castleton returns to Dave Wolk Stadium on Saturday, September 17 for a conference matchup against UMass Dartmouth at 11 a.m.
