Boyle Reaches Milestone in Softball's Split With UMass Boston

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton University softball team cruised to a Game 1 triumph before dropping the shortened nightcap on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field. Olivia Joy's career-high strikeout total, along with Jamie Boyle's 4-for-4 performance at the plate highlighted the Spartan victory. Boyle recorded her 100th career hit in Game 2, becoming the 11th player in program history to reach the century mark.

Castleton 8, UMass Boston 3

The Spartans (17-12, 8-6 LEC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Kylie Wright's sacrifice fly that scored Kate LaPan and eventually Hannah Mosher on a throwing error by the shortstop. Neither side crossed the plate again until Boyle's fourth-inning RBI single put the Spartans ahead 3-0.

Boyle tied a career-high with four hits and added three RBIs. Her two-run blast in the sixth gave Castleton a commanding 6-1 lead.

In the circle, Joy allowed just one walk to her 11 strikeouts. The Beacons (20-16, 7-9 LEC) totaled eight hits and eventually got on the board in the fifth and plated two more in the seventh, but Joy completed the game to earn her seventh victory of the season.

Boyle was one of four Spartans with multiple hits as the team totaled 12. Mosher, Allison Almond, and Madison Wilson had two each along with Boyle's four.

UMass Boston 8, Castleton 5 (5 Innings)

Castleton trailed 8-2 before setting the stage for a comeback with a three-run fourth, only to see the game called due to darkness following the fifth inning.

The Spartans led early thanks to back-to-back first-inning hits by Boyle and Almond, but UMass Boston responded with a two-run second and plated the go-ahead run in the third. A five-run Beacon fourth put the pressure on Castleton to chip away at the growing lead.

Castleton found itself back within three runs thanks to Almond's single that drove in two, followed by Machaila Arjavich's base-knock that plated Almond. The Spartans grabbed further momentum as Katie Gallagher set the Beacons down in order in the top of the fifth, but the hosts weren't able to find a run in their half. The game was ruled complete following the frame.

Wright took the loss, just her second of the year, after pitching three innings that featured two earned runs and five hits. Brianna Melchionda earned the win with five innings of work.

Boyle was once again perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one RBI. Mosher and Almond, who led the team with three RBIs, had two hits as well. Haley Tilberry powered the Beacons with two RBIs.

Castleton concludes its regular season with a trip to Southern Maine Saturday, April 30. First pitch of the conference doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
