Softball Stumbles at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine - The Castleton University softball team dropped two conference games at Southern Maine Saturday afternoon, concluding the regular season. Kate LaPan went 2-for-3 at the plate in the opening game before notching the Spartans' lone hit in Game 2 with a leadoff double.

Southern Maine 7, Castleton 2

The Spartans (17-14, 8-8 LEC) battled back from an early Husky advantage to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning, but Southern Maine went on to plate five runs in its half of the fifth to emphatically reclaim the lead and roll to a Game 1 triumph.

The Huskies (22-13, 13-3 LEC) opened the scoring in the third inning with Lauren Leidemann's two-run double. Castleton trimmed the lead to one in the following frame thanks to Makenna Thorne's sacrifice fly that scored Allison Almond

Kylie Wright's fifth-inning double, which succeeded Jamie Boyle's two-out double, tied the game. Southern Maine's five-run fifth came from four hits and two Castleton errors. Lauren Merrill, who tossed a complete game, limited the Spartan offense for the remainder.

Castleton notched eight hits against the strong pitching of Merrill, led by a pair of 2-for-3 showings from LaPan and Machaila Arjavich. Merrill and Kaitlyn Nelson paced the Husky offense, which totaled 10 hits. Olivia Joy, who pitched six innings and allowed six earned runs, took the loss.

Southern Maine 2, Castleton 1

Castleton looked primed to salvage a doubleheader split after a first-inning tally and a hot start in the circle by Wright, but the fifth inning was once again the difference-maker in Southern Maine's sweep-securing win.

Wright reached on an error with two outs in the top of the first to score LaPan, who led off with a double. Wright would then deal four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Southern Maine tied the game and later took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Castleton was held hitless over the final two innings.

Belle Snyder allowed only one hit in a winning effort, while Wright took the loss and allowed just one earned run on five hits.

Fourth-seeded Castleton will take on fifth-seeded UMass Boston on the opening day of the Little East Conference Tournament, hosted by top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State Wednesday, May 4.
