Softball Downed by UMass Dartmouth

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton University softball team dropped two conference games to a tough UMass Dartmouth team Sunday at Spartan Field as the program hosted its Strike Out Cancer Games. All proceeds from the event will go directly to cancer research.

UMass Dartmouth 9, Castleton 1

The Spartans (16-11, 7-5 LEC) stayed within striking distance through most of the opener, but a five-run Corsair seventh was too much to overcome. UMassD (27-8-1, 11-3 LEC) opened the scoring in the first inning on Jill Richards' RBI single, but Castleton would respond in the fourth with Allison Almond's solo home run.

Starting pitcher Katie Gallagher settled in after allowing the early run, keeping the Corsairs off the board until the sixth inning. Machaila Arjavich entered in relief after a three-run UMassD shot.

Castleton notched six hits against UMassD's Richards, who went the distance in the circle. The Corsairs, led by Richards and Hailey Lyons, collected 13 hits.

UMass Dartmouth 3, Castleton 0

Jamie Boyle doubled in the sixth inning to break up Kaitlyn Shirshac's no-hit bid and give the Spartans some late life, but the hosts weren't able to plate a run against UMassD's strong pitching.

Still with a chance in the home half of the seventh, Castleton strung together a couple hits courtesy of Arjavich and Makenna Thorne to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Shirshac would retire the next two batters and secure the Corsair sweep.

UMassD posted runs in the first and second innings before Olivia Joy dealt three scoreless frames. She pitched her sixth complete game of the season and second in as many days. UMassD amassed six hits against the junior.

Castleton is back at Spartan Field Tuesday, April 26 to take on UMass Boston. First pitch of the conference doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
