Softball Rides Long Ball to Senior Day Sweep

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton University softball team earned two important conference victories on a storybook Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. After being honored prior to the opening game, four different seniors homered in the thrilling sweep of Rhode Island College.

Castleton 4, Rhode Island College 1

Castleton (16-9, 7-3 LEC) found itself trailing 1-0 after the top of the first, but quickly responded with Kylie Wright's no-doubt solo home run in the second. Jamie Boyle put the Spartans on top 2-1 an inning later with a double that scored Hannah Mosher

Olivia Joy was granted all the run support she would need, settling in after allowing the early Anchorwomen tally. The junior tossed her fifth complete game of the season to earn her sixth victory and notched four strikeouts.

The Spartans would, however, tack on a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the fifth. Kate LaPan ripped a one-out double and scored on Boyle's single. Boyle would later score on Allison Almond's clutch two-out hit.

Castleton totaled eight hits in the opener, led by Boyle, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. RIC (10-12, 4-8 LEC) leveled the Spartans with eight hits.

Castleton 11, Rhode Island College 1

Castleton crossed the plate early and often in the closing game of the Senior Day twinbill, but used an explosive seven-run third to take control. The inning featured three home runs - all by seniors. Kayla Fac launched the first of her career, a three-run shot, before LaPan made it back-to-back bombs. Wright belted her team-leading fifth of the year and second of the day three batters later to cap the dominant half-inning.

Makenna Thorne posted Castleton's 11th run with a leadoff homer in the fourth, becoming the fourth senior to go yard.

Three different Spartans delivered multi-hit performances as the team totaled 11. Almond went 3-for-3 at the plate and was one of four batters with multiple RBIs. RIC posted 10 hits, but was only able to plate one run against Wright, who pitched the entirety of the five-inning affair and improved her record to a team-best 7-1.

Castleton, with 19 hits between the two contests, improved its team batting average to .337, which ranks first in the LEC.

The Spartans wrap up the weekend homestand with a doubleheader against UMass Dartmouth. The program will host its Strike Out Cancer Games tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. All proceeds from the event will go directly to cancer research.
