SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team dropped its season-opener on Saturday, falling 20-1 to Union in non-conference action on the road.
The Spartans were outshot 46-3 in the contest, including a 32-3 margin on goal. Union led in draw controls, 13-11 and had just 18 turnovers to Castleton's 37. The Spartans were just 4-of-23 on the clear, while Union was 13-of-16.
Lacey Greenamyre scored Castleton's only goal less than one minute into the first period, assisted by
Kimberly McCarthy, to start give Castleton a 1-0 lead. The Dutchwomen took over from there, blanking Castleton the remainder of the game.
Raven Payne made 12 saves in goal for Castleton, while McCarthy grabbed four ground balls. Greenamyre had a team-high five draw controls and
Grace Sharkey caused three turnovers.
Union's Grace Heiting had eight points on six goals and two assists, with Sydney McPartlon, Dana Nelson and Drew Charlton each adding hat tricks. Charlton also had 10 draw controls.
Castleton returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against St. Joseph's University (Conn.) at Dave Wolk Stadium.
