MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Castleton University softball team cruised to three victories Saturday at Myrtle Beach, improving to 6-0 on the year. Saturday marked the third consecutive season in which the Spartans have started 5-0 or better.
Castleton 8, NVU-Lyndon 0
Lyndon (4-2) had no answer for
Olivia Joy. The junior hurler struck out 10 in five innings and allowed only two hits. Joy improved to 2-0 on the season and has 19 strikeouts through two starts.
The Spartans (6-0) notched nine hits as six different batters registered at least one.
Makenna Thorne,
Jess Heinrichs, and
Kayla Fac each had multi-had efforts.
Allison Almond led the team with three RBIs thanks to her bases-clearing double in the third inning.
The five-run third that buried the Hornets featured extra-base hits from Almond, Heinrichs, and
Kayla Fac.
Castleton 6, Massachusetts Maritime 1
Kylie Wright picked up where Joy left off and dazzled in the circle, going the distance and allowing one run with four strikeouts.
Kate LaPan and
Jamie Boyle led the offense, both notching three hits and two RBIs.
The Buccaneers (1-4) hung around until Castleton took control with back-to-back two-run innings in the fourth and fifth. Singles by LaPan and Boyle gave the Spartans a comfortable lead before Thorne and
Blake Riche drove in a pair of insurance runs.
Castleton totaled 13 hits to Mass. Maritime's five.
Castleton 21, Massachusetts Maritime 1
The Spartans exploded for the most runs in a single game since April 13, 2016 (24 against NVU-Lyndon) with a 21-run output against the Buccaneers in the second half of the twin bill. A 12-run first inning gave Castleton a lead it wouldn't look back from, eventually collecting 23 hits on the game. 12 different batters registered at least a hit. Riche and Wright led the category with three apiece - Riche claimed the team-lead in RBIs with five.
Katie Gallagher started in the circle and pitched three innings, allowing two hits.
Jess Heinrichs made a strong debut, tossing two innings without allowing a hit and adding two strikeouts to her credit.
Wright and
Machaila Arjavich both crushed home runs in the fourth inning.
Castleton wraps up the Myrtle Beach trip Sunday with games against Shawnee State and Waynesburg. The opener begins at 10 a.m.
