MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Wrapping up the southern portion of the schedule, the Castleton University softball team fell 6-4 to NAIA Division I member Shawnee State Sunday at NMB Athletic Complex. The Spartans were slated to take on Waynesburg in the afternoon, but the game was called due to rain after two innings. 

Castleton scored each of its four runs in the third inning and led 4-2 following the frame, but wasn't able to hang on against the formidable Bears of Shawnee State. Hannah Mosher put the Spartans on the board with a triple that scored Kate LaPan and Kayla Fac. Jamie Boyle followed with a double that plated Mosher. Angelise Moss, who pinch ran after Machaila Arjavich walked, scored on a sacrifice fly by Kylie Wright. 

The Bears chipped away with runs in the fifth and sixth before putting up a pair in the seventh. Rylie Hughes drove in the go-ahead run with a single. Jess Heinrichs entered the circle following Hughes' base-knock and limited the damage. 

Castleton put the tying run at the plate in the home half of the seventh, but wasn't able to notch a run. 

Starting pitcher Olivia Joy delivered four solid innings with one earned run. Katie Gallagher took the loss with four earned runs in two innings. 

Castleton will return to action Saturday, March 26 hosting a doubleheader against RPI.
