MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Castleton University softball team defeated Howard Community College (Md.) in an exhibition and cruised to a shutout victory over NVU-Johnson, wrapping up the second day of action in Myrtle Beach Friday afternoon.
Castleton 9, Howard CC 5
The Spartans (3-0) put up six runs in the sixth inning to complete a come-from-behind victory over the Dragons (0-1). The explosive frame started with Kate LaPan's two-out double. Hannah Mosher scored LaPan with a double of her own in the ensuing at-bat before Jamie Boyle singled to score Mosher. Boyle was brought home by Machaila Arjavich's double and Makenna Thorne capped the inning with a single, eventually scoring on an error.
Mosher and Arjavich led the lineup with two hits apiece, while Mosher and Boyle each tallied two RBIs. Mosher also drew a pair of walks and scored three runs.
Olivia Bowen pitched the final two innings, earning the victory without allowing a hit. Kylie Wright started and logged three innings before Arjavich entered in relief.
Castleton 8, NVU-Johnson 0
Castleton put up two runs in the first and wouldn't look back on its way to a five-inning victory over Johnson (0-3). The Spartans led 3-0 before blowing it open with a four-run third. A lone run in the fifth would mark the end of the game.
Katie Gallagher earned her second victory of the season in the circle and struck out a career-high five batters. She allowed just four hits and one walk.
Mosher, Blake Riche, and Madison Hanna each had multi-hit efforts to pace the hot Spartan offense. Seven different batters notched an RBI.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow with a full slate at North Myrtle Beach Athletic Complex, taking on NVU-Lyndon before a doubleheader with Massachusetts Maritime. The first of three games is set to begin at 10 a.m.
