CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team needed just one goal to come out with a win in their Score for a Cure game against Plymouth State Saturday afternoon.
The score came with just 30 seconds left in the first half from
Ashlee Meczywor, who lined up a free kick from 30 yards out and sent it soaring over the Panthers' goalie and in for the goal. In a contest where neither side got more than three shots on net, the senior's score was the decider.
The Spartans (5-9-1, 3-2-1 LEC) created a trio of chances early from
Brytney Moore and
Alexis Billings, but were unable to find the back of the net. After their initial push, neither side was able to establish much offense — Castleton held the Panthers without a shot on net in the first half — before Meczywor struck for her first goal of the season in what would ultimately be the game-winner.
After being held without a shot in the first 45 minutes, Plymouth turned on the pressure, getting seven off in the second, three of which were handled with ease by
Alex Benfatti who secured her second shutout of the week and fourth of the season in the win.
The Panthers had one final chance in the game's closing minutes but the Spartan defense stood strong once again — they have allowed just one goal in their last three games and currently sit at fourth in the conference for goals allowed in LEC games at eight — sealing the 1-0 victory on their home turf. The win ties them for third in the conference standings.
Castleton will look to extend their win streak further when they host SUNY Potsdam Tuesday, October 18 in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
