Box Score DANBURY, Conn. – The Castleton men's soccer team traveled for a matchup with top-seeded WestConn Saturday afternoon, dropping a 2-0 decision to the undefeated Wolves on the road.
WestConn (12-0, 4-0 LEC) opened the game on the front foot, racking up two shots and two corners in the first 10 minutes before breaking the tie at the 11:45 mark on a shot that snuck under
Andres Soto-Burgos to give the Wolves the early lead.
The Spartans (3-4-2, 1-1-1 LEC) responded to falling behind well, getting a shot on target from
Matt Spiller just one minute later — their lone shot on frame of the contest — before WestConn once again regained control. The Wolves outshot Castleton 7-0 over the remainder of the half, but Soto-Burgos kept it close, racking up three of his seven saves to hold it to a 1-0 game entering the break.
The second half brought more of the same with WestConn controlling possession, but the Spartans did well to disturb their attack, allowing just five of the opponents' 12 shots to get on frame and test Soto-Burgos.
But while the senior was able to deny the first four shots he faced of the half, WestConn snuck one more by him with just over a minute to go in regulation to double their lead and clinch the 2-0 win over the Spartans.
Castleton will look to bounce back with a road matchup against Salem State Tuesday, October 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
