CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2021 season with a 3-0 win over Colby Sawyer Saturday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Castleton opened the game with a bang as
Brytney Moore made a beautiful pass off a free kick to
Julia Carone, who hammered it home from the right side past Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper Alexis LeBreton. A two-time Team MVP, Carone scored her first of the season and 19th of her career.
The Spartans would see several opportunities throughout the remainder of the opening half, but LeBreton stood tall and kept the score at 1-0 as the non-conference foes entered halftime.
Opening halves with goals became a theme for Castleton as Moore found the back of the net in the 45th minute, just 40 seconds into the stanza.
Jamie Barrett dribbled down the field in open space before making a quick centering pass to Moore, who one-timed it home.
The hosts would cap the dominant performance with a third goal in the 88th minute courtesy of
Jordan Mattison. The sophomore earned her first career tally after receiving a well-executed pass from
Jamie Ledoux and converting a golden opportunity in front of the net.
Junior goalkeeper
Alex Benfatti earned her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career. She was only called upon to make one save - a sign of the Spartans' stingy defense in the home opener. Castleton peppered Colby-Sawyer with 24 total shots, 14 of which were on target.
The team returns to action at Norwich on Wednesday, September 8. The non-conference match is slated for 7 p.m.
