GORHAM, Maine - The Castleton men's soccer team claimed a thrilling 1-0 victory at Southern Maine Saturday afternoon to open Little East Conference play.
It was
Jacob Henderson's heroics in the 89th minute that gave Castleton (2-3-0, 1-0-0 LEC) the win. The junior midfielder broke the scoreless tie with under a minute remaining in regulation after receiving a centering pass from
Adolphe Alfani and knocking a one-timer off the crossbar and over the goal line. It was good for his second tally of the year, which leads all Spartans.
Andres Soto-Burgos, who earned his first career shutout, made two saves in the opening half. The Castleton defense took over in the second, allowing no shots on goal. Southern Maine's (3-2-1, 0-1-0 LEC) Jacob Satires faced four Spartan shots on target.
Goals were at a premium, but both sides saw near-misses in the opening minutes. Alfani had a good look at the goal, but pushed a shot wide left before Soto-Burgos came up with a diving save on the other end. His only other save would come in the 22nd minute.
After the strong start to conference play, Castleton men's soccer heads to UMaine Farmington for a Sunday tilt. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
