CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton men's soccer team fell to intrastate foe Norwich Tuesday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium, despite a strong performance from the Spartan back line and goalkeeper
Andres Soto-Burgos.
The junior stood tall in the opening half, racking up six saves with the help of a stingy defensive unit. Cadet forward Joseph Thongsythavong put the visitors ahead 1-0 in the 35th minute as he gained possession on a breakaway and fired a shot past Soto-Burgos. It would mark the first of Thongsythavong's three tallies.
Norwich (3-1-0), who was recently ranked seventh regionally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, extended the 1-0 advantage in the 56th minute before striking again in the 57th - both goals credited to Thongsythavong.
The Spartans (1-3-0) attempted five shots on goal, led by
Ben Stewart with two, but weren't able to sneak one past Norwich's Robert Wagenseller, who played the entirety of the match and earned the shutout. Soto-Burgos logged 76 minutes and recorded eight saves.
Jonathan Maul played the remainder and didn't see any Cadet shots.
Castleton men's soccer returns to action Saturday, September 18 with a trip to Southern Maine for the Little East Conference opener.
