Women's Soccer Drops Hard-Fought Contest to Perennial Power Williams

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton University women's soccer team battled a tough Williams College squad to 2-0 result Sunday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Winners of three of the last five national championships, the Ephs struck first in the 34th minute as Mikaya Kappes boomed a corner kick that snuck past Spartan goalkeeper Alex Benfatti following a scramble at the goal line.

Williams would double its advantage in the 42nd minute as Parker Harnett fired a well-placed shot past Benfatti's outstretched arms.

The junior keeper totaled six saves - four shy of her season-high set at Plattsburgh State in the opener.

Leyla Kamshad handled goalkeeping duties for the Ephs in the first half, but Olivia Dabinett entered for the second stanza to preserve the shutout. Kamshad made one save in her appearance, which was Castleton's only shot on goal.

The Spartans made a strong defensive effort in the second half, limiting the visitors to five shots compared to 10 in the opening 45 minutes.

Castleton heads to New England College for a Wednesday evening tilt before returning home to face Southern Maine in the Little East Conference opener. Part of the Spartans' homecoming festivities, kick-off is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
