CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton women's soccer team highlighted Castleton's Saturday homecoming festivities with a 1-0 victory over Southern Maine.
Goalkeeper
Alex Benfatti earned her second shutout of the season and fifth of her career with a six-save performance while
Brytney Moore contributed the lone tally in the 64th minute.
The Huskies (5-1-0, 0-1-0 LEC) had scoring opportunities early, but Benfatti came through with back-to-back saves in the fourth minute to keep the visitors scoreless. She would be called upon to make one more save in the first half to reach halftime with three. The Spartans (3-1-1, 1-0-0 LEC) only recorded one shot on goal - a free kick by
Rylee Nichols.
Moore would be the difference maker in the second half as she received a pass from
Julia Carone before tucking a well-placed rocket into the bottom left corner of the net. It marked her fourth of the year, which is good for the team lead.
Benfatti was once again solid in the second half, making three saves to secure the victory. The Spartans opened Little East Conference play with a victory for a third consecutive season.
Southern Maine goalkeeper Bre Atwood faced five shots on goal, including Moore's game-winner.
The Castleton women's soccer team will compete in five consecutive road matches, starting with a Tuesday afternoon date with Middlebury. Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
