Group Effort Leads Softball to Game 1 Victory at RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Castleton softball team earned a dominant Game 1 victory before dropping Game 2 Saturday afternoon at Rhode Island College. Jamie Boyle and Miranda Fish highlighted the victory, both going 3-for-4 at the plate. Eight different Spartans registered a hit in the opener.

Castleton 10, RIC 4

The Anchorwomen jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first, but the Spartans battled back and eventually took a four-run lead with a fifth-inning rally. The teams entered the frame locked at 3-3 until Jamie Boyle scored on a wild pitch to give Castleton the lead. Kayla Fac would then smack a two-RBI double to left field, increasing the lead to three. Jayna Ryan notched an RBI single to cap off the productive inning.

Just an inning later, Miranda Fish put the Spartans up 9-3. Madison Hanna rounded out Castleton's scoring in the final inning, crossing on a wild pitch.

Boyle opened the scoring with a centerfield single that plated Devin Millerick and Makenna Thorne to tie the conference tilt at 2-2. Fish, who garnered a trio of hits, gave Castleton its first lead with a third-inning single. Boyle matched Fish with three base knocks.

Machaila Arjavich started the game in the circle and allowed two runs in as many innings. Katie Gallagher entered in relief and totaled four innings. She stayed perfect on the year, improving to 4-0. The Waxhaw, N.C. product allowed two runs on six hits.

RIC 7, Castleton 4

A late comeback attempt fell short as Castleton dropped Game 2. The Spartans faced a 6-0 deficit until Fish's fourth-inning triple scored Allison Almond. Fac registered her third RBI of the day with a groundout to send Fish home, cutting the lead to four.

Arjavich launched a two-run shot over the centerfield fence. The homer marked the first of the year for Castleton.

The Anchorwomen's early lead came courtesy of a four-run second frame. Ashley Armstrong and Callie Rathbun both chipped in RBI doubles.

The loss went to Olivia Joy, who allowed five earned runs in four innings. Gallagher returned to the circle after picking up the Game 1 win and tossed two innings in relief. Tatiana Burcy earned the win for RIC.

Almond led the charge offensively with three hits while Millerick and Arjavich both tallied two. Both being credited with a hit in each end of the doubleheader, Ryan and Thorne now hold seven-game hitting streaks.

Next on the docket for the Spartans is a nonconference doubleheader at WestConn on Tuesday, April 27.
