DANBURY, Conn. – The Castleton softball team earned a Game 1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Western Connecticut State before dropping Game 2 of the nonconference doubleheader.
Olivia Bowen and reigning LEC Pitcher and Rookie of the Week
Katie Gallagher combined for a shutout in the opener while
Machaila Arjavich led the offense with three hits and three RBIs.
Castleton 8, WestConn 0
The Spartans (12-8, 5-5 LEC) got on the board early and often in Game 1. Arjavich kicked off her big day with a bases-clearing double that scored
Makenna Thorne and
Jamie Boyle. The score would remain 2-0 until the fifth inning, when Castleton took a commanding lead over WestConn (5-13, 4-8 LEC).
Jayna Ryan led off the frame with a single before Thorne reached on a bunt. Both scored thanks to a double by
Devin Millerick and an RBI groundout by Boyle. Millerick crossed the plate on Arjavich's second double of the game.
Castleton tacked on another in the sixth as
Miranda Fish ripped a double down the left field line and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan. The Spartans picked up their seventh and eighth runs after another double by Fish in the final inning.
In the circle, Bowen tossed four scoreless innings to earn her third victory of the season. Gallagher pitched the remaining three, earning her second save and securing the shutout.
Fish, Millerick, and Arjavich each put together multi-hit performances, combining for five of Castleton's 10 base knocks.
WestConn 9, Castleton 0
WestConn avenged its Game 1 loss with a decisive Game 2 triumph. The hosts put up five runs in the first two innings and tacked on three more in the fourth. Alyssa Lionetti, Charline Plasczynski, and Annie Rosa each registered two hits.
Millerick notched two hits for a third consecutive game while
Hailee Schrader tallied her first hit of the season.
WestConn's Hailey Golembiewski earned the win while Arjavich and Bowen both made appearances in the circle for the Spartans.
Castleton heads to Eastern Connecticut State for a pair of conference tilts Friday, April 30. Game 1 of the doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
