Women's Lacrosse's Late Run Not Enough Against USM

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team scored six consecutive goals in the waning minutes of the game, but it was not enough to overcome its deficit against the University of Southern Maine on Saturday as the Spartans fell by a final score of 19-6.

Lacey Greenamyre kicked off the six-goal run with her seventh score of the season, before Kimberly McCarthy notched three straight goals over a four-minute span. Aubra Linn then notched her third goal of the season before Cheyanne Stone rounded out the scoring with 2:35 to play.

McCarthy finished the day with a hat trick—her second of the season—in addition to three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Greenamyre netted a goal and an assist for the Spartans while grabbing six draw controls and two ground balls. Aubra Linn also had a goal and an assist, scoring on a free-position shot for the Spartans. Raven Payne was charged with the loss, allowing 18 goals in 47 minutes of action with 10 saves. Carly Curtis stopped one shot and allowed one goal in 13 minutes of play.

Rachel Shanks had eight points for Southern Maine, scoring five times with three assists in the game. Alex Farley netted four goals for the Huskies and Megan Violette added three. Kiaya Gatchell scored twice and had two assists, while Jennifer Darasz rounded out the multi-goal scorers for USM. Evelyn Hinkley had a team-high five draw controls and three ground balls. Mariah Vaillancourt earned the win in goal, playing the first half and stopping the only shot she saw. Cece Racine allowed six goals and made three saves in the second half.

USM held a 36-17 edge in shots, including a 30-10 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies grabbed 20 ground balls to Castleton's 16, and had a narrow edge in draw controls, 13-11. Both sides were successful on 10 clears on the day, Castleton on 16 attempts and Southern Maine on 14.

The Huskies opened the game up with a quick score, finding the back of the net just 3:24 into the contest. Hinkley doubled the lead just 50 seconds later, and the Farley extended the edge to three goals just over 10 minutes in. USM added seven more goals to make it 10-0 over the ensuing nine minutes, and tacked on four more goals before halftime to take a 14-0 lead into the break.

The lead continued to grow after the break, with the Huskies tacking on four more goals before Castleton eventually got on the board with 11:14 to play. The Spartans rattled off six straight goals over a nine minute stretch before Farley capped the game's scoring with 25 seconds remaining to make it 19-6.

Castleton is back in action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Plymouth State at Dave Wolk Stadium.
