Softball Stays Perfect With Sweep of WestConn

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton softball team stayed hot, earning a sweep of Western Connecticut State in a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. The Spartans claimed Game 1 in comeback-fashion before fending off the resurgent WestConn squad in Game 2.

Castleton 6, WestConn 5

Castleton (4-0) trailed 5-1 midway through the opener, but used a loud fourth inning to erase the deficit. A single by Jamie Boyle brought home Kate LaPan to tie the game. LaPan had just doubled to bring the hosts within one.

Boyle would contribute another clutch single in the sixth, scoring Jayna Ryan to give Castleton a 6-5 advantage. Olivia Joy entered the circle in the seventh to secure the victory.

Miranda Fish put Castleton on the board in the first with a base-knock, but WestConn (0-2) battled back with a two-run second inning before notching another in the third.

Olivia Bowen earned the win in the circle for the Spartans, pitching two innings and allowing just one hit. Machaila Arjavich received the starting nod and tossed four innings, striking out three WestConn batters.

Castleton 6, WestConn 4

The Spartans jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first, but WestConn had a four-run inning of their own, eventually knotting the game at 4-4 in the fifth. A fifth inning double by Jayna Ryan plated Devin Millerick and Madison Hanna to give the hosts a 6-4 advantage.

Castleton's explosive first inning came thanks to Kayla Fac, who slapped a two-RBI double.

Joy went the distance in the circle after picking up the save in Game 1. Through seven innings, she allowed two earned runs and struck out eight without allowing a single walk.

Castleton is set to take on Norwich in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 31. Game 1 in Northfield, Vt. is set for 3 pm.
