CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton softball team moved to 5-1 on the season after a doubleheader split with Keene State. Taking Game 1 by a score of 5-1, the Spartans started a perfect 5-0 for the second time in as many seasons. Freshman
Katie Gallagher earned her first career win in the circle in Game 1 before the Owls fended off a late Castleton threat in Game 2.
Castleton 4, Keene State 1
The Spartans used an explosive four-run third to claim Game 1. Helping her own cause,
Machaila Arjavich punched a two-RBI double to open up the scoring.
Makenna Thorne contributed a two-RBI double of her own to help Castleton race to a 4-0 advantage.
Keene State got on the board in the next half inning via solo homer. It was the only run surrendered by Arjavich in three innings of work. Gallagher, who ultimately earned the win, entered the circle in the fourth. The Waxhaw, N.C. native went three hitless innings, striking out two.
Castleton called on
Olivia Joy to close out the opener. She earned her second save of the season.
Kate LaPan, who leads the team with seven hits on the year, and
Devin Millerick were both 2-for-3 at the plate. The Spartans registed eight total hits to Keene State's five.

The Owls jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning and didn't look back. Joy received the starting nod after picking up the Game 1 save - she suffered her first loss of the year as she moved to 3-1 in the circle.
Owning only two hits heading into the final inning, Castleton faced a 5-0 deficit.
Hannah Mosher and
Jayna Ryan both slapped base hits before Boyle singled to finally put the Spartans on the board. Boyle leads the team with six RBIs.
Gallagher took the circle once again - this time allowing one run in two innings. Olivia Albert went the distance in the circle for the Owls to earn the victory.
Castleton will travel to Plymouth State tomorrow for another doubleheader - first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
