NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The Castleton University women's ice hockey team, competing in its final road game of the season, fell to Norwich University 4-1 Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
Â
The Spartans (6-6-1) came out of the gates quickly, grabbing the early lead at the 3:39 mark of the first period. With the Cadets (6-1-0) controlling the pace of play for the majority of the period,
Ryanne Mix laid down a perfectly placed shot past goaltender Leocadia Clark from the far boards, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. With Mix scoring the lone goal of the Spartans, it marked the first time she has found the back of the net this season while tallying her fifth-career goal.
Â
With the Spartans taking the lead into the beginning of the second period, the Cadets took little time to even the scoring. As the Spartans returned to full strength after a Cadet power play that began near the end of the first period, Samantha Benoit received the puck at the point and scored to tie the game at one. The Cadets would later take the lead in the period as Mikah Baptiste scored to give the Cadets a 2-1 advantage.
Â
Kirsten DiCicco held the Cadets scoreless through the first period of action, stopping all 13 shots she faced. She would finish the contest recording 27 saves while her counterpart Clark tallied 13 saves.
Â
The Cadets began to pull away in the third period as two power play goals from Silvia Björgvinsdóttir, and KC Herne gave the team a 4-1 lead. The Spartans would remain scoreless throughout the entire second and third periods as the team dropped its fourth straight game against the Cadets.
Â
Castleton returns to action Saturday, March 27, as the Spartans wrap up the 2020-21 season at home against Norwich. The puck is scheduled to drop at Spartan Arena at 1 p.m.
