Women's Hockey Shut Out by Norwich as Season Comes to a Close

RUTLAND, Vt. -- As the 2020-21 season came to a close, the Castleton University women's hockey team dropped a 4-0 non-conference decision Saturday at Spartan Arena.

After a scoreless first period that saw both teams record seven shots on goal, the Cadets (7-1-0) jumped out to a lead early in the second period. With just over a minute off the clock, the Spartans (6-7-1) fell behind as Silvia Björgvinsdóttir scored to put the Cadets up 1-0. While on the power play, the Cadets surged ahead as goaltender Katlyn Hathaway pushed aside a plethora of shots. However, as a scrum ensued in front of the Spartan net, Björgvinsdóttir slotted a shot home after an initial shot from Ally LaGue was saved by Hathaway.

Hathaway, playing in her final collegiate hockey game, finished the game with 26 saves. She tallied 11 saves during the second period alone the Cadets poured on the pressure.

The Cadets scored two more goals in the second period, solidifying the win as KC Herne and Melianne Reynolds gave the Cadets a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Spartans were able to generate 23 shots on goal, testing goaltender Leocadia Clark; at times throughout the game. Emily Harris led the way for the Spartans with seven shots on goal as the Spartans had multiple scoring opportunities.

Despite a valiant defensive effort by the Spartans, the Cadets added a fourth goal in the third period. Ingrid Holstead-Berge scored at the 15:02 mark of the period off an assist from Samantha Benoit, who picked up her 100th career point in today's contest.

With the season coming to a close, the Spartans will graduate three seniors and will bring back the majority of the roster for the 2021-22 season.
